I was not in the lesson that this problem happened in because it was a free, although afterwards I was informed about it in detail
It seemed after the rough cut, the apple-mac was loading incredibly slow, and most likely due to the huge amount of raw footage that was imported into the project. So, after checking all the clips we wanted were in the timeline, in hope that the computer would speed up if there was more free space, all the original footage we did not need was deleted. After this was done, the edited clips on the time line did not play, and instead appeared with a grey screen stating "source footage missing".
It turned out, that this raw footage was not saved on the server and only on the computer, and we had forgotten to do it beforehand (it was mentioned, but at the time we wanted to continue editing and said we'd do it later :S).
However, on the thumbnail timeline, a still-shot of the clip was still visible, acting as an indicator to us which clips were meant to be there. So, it was just a matter of importing all the raw footage again, sifting through it, and finding the same clips and cutting them to the exact time (the thumbnails also showed how long each clip was).
The positive side of this tragic disaster that put us terribly behind schedule and infuriated us both mentally and physically was... we learnt to save our stuff onto the server first, before anything!!! And also, this gave us the opportunity to explore alternative clips to use if we could not find the actual one, which at times the outcome was better than the original rough cut clip.
